Plums are the first to blossom in the early spring,When the air is still cold,
Orchids deep in the mountain valleys refresh their surrounding with delicate fragrance.
Chrysanthemums bloom in late autumn, withstanding the heavy frost.
And bamboo keeps green through the bitterly cold winter.
The Koreans long ago referred to these plants as the Four Gracious Plants
because they manifest the virtues that gracious men aspire to.
They have all long been loved as subjects of literature and art, and paintings of the Four Gracious Plants were an important genre of literati painting.
