Lotta Kühlhorn sees the world in strong patterns and bold colors. She was one of the first designers in Sweden to embrace the graphic elements of “junk culture,” pop, films, and mass produced items, and reinterpret them as her own.

Her inspiration comes from close to home. 1970’s cupboard paper, housecoats and aprons, bed linens and tablecloths. Simple, striking, familiar shapes form the basis of her illustrations and patterns. It’s a technique that she continues to refine, always striving for that delicate balance between professional polish and keeping it simple.

Much of Lotta Kühlhorn’s work has been designing book covers. Her designs have received such acclaim that she is credited with playing a role in Sweden’s growing demand for paperback books.

In this collection for retro etc, Lotta looked to her childhood for inspiration. The unique shape of the cutting board brings to mind some of the things she would find at her grandmother’s house.

Right now she has her hands full doing design work for IKEA, new illustrations, more book covers, and of course fresh and fun new products for retro etc.
